Light Graffiti (with tutorial)

Light Graffiti and known as light painting or light drawing is one of the photography technique. Light graffiti usually made at night or in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera.

The light can either be used to selectively illuminate parts of the subject or to “paint” a picture by shining it directly into the camera lens. Light painting requires a sufficiently slow shutter speed, usually a second or more.

What u need:

  • Camera
  • torchlight (any type and colour)
  • tripod (important due to the long exposure times involved) or flat surface
  • shutter release cable or use self timer if u don’t have shutter release cable in order to reduce/minimize camera shake that will cause blurring picture.
Camera setting:
  • ISO 100 (to minimize noise and increase exposure tolerance)
  • Aperture set to widest setting
  • shutter speed from 5” to 30”
  • focus set to Manual Focus(autofocus systems may not perform well in low light)
Photo i shoot below not use tripod but use flat surface to stabilize my camera and i use ISO100, Aperture F22, Shutter speed 30seconds with manual focus.
